Edibles 101
What edibles actually do (and why the slow onset matters)
Edibles are cannabis-infused food, drink, or capsules. When you eat THC instead of smoking it, your liver converts a portion of it into 11-hydroxy-THC β a longer-lasting and often more sedating compound than the THC you inhale. That's why the same milligram dose can feel meaningfully stronger as an edible, and why the effects last hours instead of an hour.
The catch is the slow onset. Smoking peaks in 5β10 minutes. Edibles take 30 minutes to 2 hours to even start, with the peak landing around the 2β3-hour mark. The single most common rookie mistake is "I don't feel anything" at the 45-minute mark, taking another dose, and then catching the full double dose at hour three. The rule is simple: start low, wait the full two hours, then decide.
Categories
Six categories you'll see on a Vermont menu
The biggest category by far. Pre-portioned, easy to dose (typically 5mg or 10mg per piece), and the most consistent onset. A good first edible.
Bars or bites portioned into 5mgβ10mg squares. Some claim faster onset because of fat content, but real-world timing is similar to gummies.
Nano-emulsified beverages can hit in 15β30 minutes and wear off faster β closer to an alcoholic drink than a classic edible. Popular substitute for alcohol.
Precise dose, no taste, slow and even onset. Favored by patients and anyone using cannabis for sleep or chronic discomfort.
Liquid drops, taken under the tongue (faster, 15β45 min) or swallowed (full edible onset). Easiest way to micro-dose in 1mg increments.
Cookies and brownies β the original edible. Smaller selection in retail than gummies; serving sizes can be less precise, so read the label carefully.
Dosing
How much to take the first time
First edible, low THC tolerance, or you just want to feel relaxed without being noticeably high.
Most regular consumers' sweet spot. A noticeable, comfortable high that lasts 3β5 hours.
Higher tolerance only. Strong body effects, sedation, and a longer comedown β plan your evening accordingly.
Vermont rules
The legal stuff, in plain English
- 21 and older with a valid government ID. Every dispensary will card you, every time.
- 500mg of THC in edibles is the cap on a single purchase, alongside the broader 1 oz flower / 5 g concentrate limits.
- Consume on private property only β no public consumption, no consuming in cars (even as a passenger), no federal land, and check the policy at hotels and short-term rentals before lighting up or unwrapping a gummy.
- Don't cross state lines. Bringing cannabis from Vermont into New York, Massachusetts, or New Hampshire is a federal offense β even between two legal states.
- Driving impaired = DUI. Vermont treats cannabis impairment the same as alcohol behind the wheel.
- Cash is welcome, cards usually aren't. Most shops are cash-only or use a cashless-ATM workaround because of federal banking rules. ATMs on site are common.

Reading the label
Four numbers that actually matter
- mg THC per serving. The number you actually consume in one piece. 5mg is the Vermont standard; pieces in the 2.5mg or 10mg range are common.
- mg THC per package. Multiply per-serving Γ servings. A 100mg bag is ten 10mg gummies, not one 100mg dose β score the pieces, don't bite a whole bag.
- CBD content & ratio. Look for a CBD number alongside THC. A 1:1 or 2:1 CBD:THC product is noticeably less intense for the same THC, and a good fallback if a 5mg gummy still feels too strong.
- Batch number & test date. Every product must be lab-tested in Vermont for potency, pesticides, and contaminants. Reputable shops will hand you the Certificate of Analysis on request β if a budtender won't, that's a flag.
