Mendo Breath was bred by Gage Green Group (GGG) from OGKB (OG Kush Breath) × Mendo Montage. Mendo Montage is Gage Green's own cross of Mendo Purps and Crystal Locomotive — Northern California heirloom genetics with grape-berry sweetness and high resin. OGKB provides the OG potency foundation and body weight; Mendo Montage provides the sweet vanilla-caramel top notes that make Mendo Breath unusual among OG-family strains.

The F1 release was clone-only; Mendo Breath F2 feminized seeds followed and became more widely distributed. ThugPug Genetics used a Mendo Breath F2 male called "Studly Spewright" as the backbone of his Breath program — producing Garlic Breath (GMO Cookies × Mendo Breath F2) and Peanut Butter Breath (Do-Si-Dos × Mendo Breath), among others.
