The Nearest Dispensaries: Three Shops on the Derby/Newport US-5 Corridor

For Island Pond and most of Essex County, the closest licensed cannabis shops are three dispensaries clustered on US Route 5 in Derby, Vermont — approximately 28–32 miles from Island Pond via VT-105 West. Budget 35–45 minutes each way. Because it's a real drive from Essex County, call ahead or check the shop's online menu to confirm hours and stock before you leave — rural Vermont dispensary hours can shift seasonally.

How to get there from Island Pond: Take VT-105 West ~28 miles to Newport. At Newport, pick up US-5 South. All three Derby shops are on US-5 within about 3.5 miles of each other heading south. From Canaan in the northeast corner of Essex County, the drive to Newport shrinks to roughly 15 miles.

Kingdom Boyz Cannabis — 3731 US Route 5, Derby

Kingdom Boyz is a CCB-licensed adult-use dispensary and in-house cultivator, 3.2 miles south of Newport center. Essex County's southern edge near Guildhall is roughly equidistant between the Derby corridor to the north and St. Johnsbury to the south, both around 35–45 miles depending on your exact starting point. Island Pond Cannabis Company Is a Cultivator, Not a Retailer

Essex County residents sometimes come across the name "Island Pond Cannabis" and assume a retail shop exists locally. Island Pond Cannabis Company is a licensed Vermont cannabis cultivator and brand — it grows cannabis and wholesales it to dispensaries across Vermont. It does not operate a retail store open to the public. If you've seen Island Pond Cannabis products on a dispensary menu, you're looking at the brand label; you buy them at the dispensary, not in Island Pond.

The CCB's public licensed retailer list confirms no retail cannabis license in Essex County. Until that changes, the drive to Derby or St. Johnsbury is the only path to legally purchased cannabis.

Vermont Cannabis Laws in Essex County

Vermont's S.278 (Act 176), effective July 1, 2026, sets the following limits for adults 21 and older:

• Flower: 2 oz maximum possession
• Concentrate: 10 g maximum possession
• Edibles: 500 mg THC maximum possession
• Home cultivation: Up to 6 plants per household (2 mature, 4 immature)

Public consumption is prohibited statewide — parks, trails, parking lots, and all public spaces. Vermont's base cannabis tax is 14% excise plus 6% sales tax (20% combined). Border Warning: Canada and New Hampshire

Essex County borders Quebec at Canaan and Norton, and New Hampshire along its entire eastern edge. These borders are not theoretical limits for cannabis:

Canada border (Canaan / Norton crossings): Transporting any amount of cannabis across the US–Canada border is a federal crime under both US and Canadian law, regardless of Vermont's legalization or Canada's federal cannabis legalization. Border agents search vehicles in both directions and can seize cannabis and issue criminal charges. Do not bring any purchased cannabis to these crossings.

New Hampshire border: Vermont cannabis cannot legally enter New Hampshire. Consume any cannabis purchased in Vermont before crossing any state border.
