Vermont's legal cannabis market is a draw for tourists, especially visitors from neighboring states where recreational cannabis isn't yet legal. Burlington, as Vermont's largest city and the hub of Chittenden County, is the most accessible destination for cannabis tourism. Here's what out-of-state visitors need to know.

Can Out-of-State Visitors Buy Cannabis in Vermont?

Yes — Vermont does not require proof of residency to purchase recreational cannabis. Any adult 21 or older with a valid government-issued photo ID can buy from licensed Vermont dispensaries. This is one of the most visitor-friendly policies among legal states.

Purchase & Possession Limits for Visitors

Visitors are subject to the same limits as Vermont residents: up to 1 ounce of flower, 5 grams of concentrate, or 500mg of THC in edibles per transaction. You can visit multiple dispensaries in one day, but you cannot possess more than these amounts total.

Where to Buy in Burlington

Burlington has a dense cluster of dispensaries within walking distance of downtown and the Church Street Marketplace:

  • Float On Dispensary (136 1/2 Church St) — Best all-around selection. Open late (until midnight Fri-Sat). Great for first-time visitors.
  • True 802 Cannabis (132 Church St, 2nd Floor) — Strong edible selection. Upstairs location on Church Street.
  • Bern Gallery (135 Main St) — Smoke shop and dispensary combined. Wide accessory selection for travelers who forgot supplies.
  • Heybud Dispensary (291 Saint Paul St) — Good for delivery if you're staying in a hotel. Quick online ordering.

Important Rules for Tourists

  • Consumption is only legal on private property — not in hotels, parks, sidewalks, or vehicles
  • Do NOT transport cannabis across state lines — this remains a federal crime even if you're traveling to another legal state
  • Most hotels in Burlington do not allow cannabis smoking on premises; check policies before booking
  • Edibles and vapes are generally more discreet options for hotel stays
  • Keep your purchase in the original labeled packaging until consumed

Beyond Dispensaries: Burlington Cannabis Experiences

While there are no cannabis cafes or consumption lounges in Vermont yet, Burlington offers complementary experiences: the Church Street Marketplace for shopping, Lake Champlain waterfront for scenic walks, and the Burlington Farmers Market for local food. Several local tour companies offer "behind-the-scenes" agricultural tours that include Vermont's hemp farms.

Cannabis-Friendly Hotels & Accommodations

Most Burlington hotels are cannabis-neutral (no smoking on premises, but edibles and vapes are generally tolerated if used discreetly). Some Airbnbs in the area explicitly allow cannabis use — filter by house rules when booking. A few hotels near the UVM campus are more lenient than the downtown chain hotels. Call ahead and ask about their cannabis policy.
